Aswesuma Payment Amounts in 2026: Tiers, Half Rule and Supplements

How much does Aswesuma actually pay in 2026? The honest answer is "it depends on your tier and your household" — but the numbers themselves are fixed, and you can work out your own figure in about a minute. This guide lays out the two paying tiers, the half rule that catches small households out, the supplements for elderly and disabled members, and the dates the new money moves.

The two paying tiers

Households are sorted by a Proxy Means Test score, prepared with the Department of Census and Statistics from survey data on housing, assets, income and family circumstances. The October 2026 updated list placed 991,800 families into two tiers:

  • Extremely poor: Rs 17,500 per month, paid for 36 months. 363,142 families are in this tier on the new list.
  • Poor: Rs 10,000 per month, paid for 24 months. 628,658 families are in this tier.

Over the full term, an extremely poor household at the standard rate receives Rs 630,000 in total, and a poor household receives Rs 240,000. Those totals assume the standard rate — the half rule below changes them for very small households.

The half rule for small households

If your household has two members or fewer, the board pays half the tier amount: Rs 8,750 a month instead of Rs 17,500, or Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 10,000. The logic is that the standard rates assume a typical family size, so a one- or two-person household is paid at the reduced rate. This is the single most common reason a family's actual payment looks "wrong" when it arrives. It is not an error at the bank — check your household size on the board's records first. If the size itself is recorded wrongly, that is a factual error worth raising, and our guide on appealing an Aswesuma decision explains how challenges work during the open window.

Supplements: over-70s and disabled members

Since a Cabinet decision in March 2025, two supplements sit on top of the tier payment. Each household member aged 70 or above adds Rs 5,000 a month. Each certified disabled member adds Rs 10,000 a month. Worked examples make this concrete:

  • A poor-tier household of four, no supplements: Rs 10,000 a month.
  • The same household with one grandmother aged 74: Rs 15,000 a month.
  • An extremely poor household with a certified disabled member: Rs 27,500 a month.
  • A two-person poor-tier household with one member over 70: half base (Rs 5,000) plus the position confirmed by the board's rules for supplements — worth verifying at the DS office or on 1924, because small-household treatment of the extras is exactly the kind of detail that gets misquoted on social media.

The disability supplement requires certification, so keep the medical certification paperwork with your other programme documents.

The tiers that ended

Two older tiers no longer pay. The transitional tier — Rs 5,000 a month for six months — ended in April 2025. The vulnerable tier — Rs 5,000 a month for 12 months — was discontinued in June 2026. If your payments stopped during 2025 or 2026 and nobody explained why, one of these endings is the likely reason. Families from the old tiers were included in this year's information update, and some have re-qualified into the two paying tiers. Check your current status rather than assuming — the steps in our name-check guide for the beneficiary list take five minutes with an NIC number.

When the new money moves

For families who qualified on the October 2026 list, the schedule is: bank-account opening letters issued from November 12, 2026, then first payments credited on November 27, 2026. The letter matters — payments go into a bank account, and the letter is what you present at the bank if you need to open one. Keep it safe when it arrives. A second updated list is expected in December 2026 covering 740,127 more families, with its own payment schedule to follow.

And a standing warning, because it protects real money: Aswesuma never charges a fee, never asks for a bank PIN, and never pays through agents. The amounts above come from the board or they do not come at all. If your figure looks wrong, the helpline 1924 and your Divisional Secretariat office are the two places that can actually check it.
